Experience, perspective, and a genuine interest in people.

I'm Joseph Galante, a New York State Licensed Mental Health Counselor with Diagnostic Privilege. My work has taken me through psychiatric hospital, community-based, and private office settings, where I have worked with people facing a broad range of emotional, behavioral, and life challenges. Those experiences have shaped a grounded, compassionate style of counseling that respects both the complexity and the individuality of each person.

My clinical background includes work with chronic mental illness, trauma, anger management, substance use concerns, forensically involved individuals, domestic violence issues, and men's issues. I also offer confidential counseling for first responders. I approach these concerns without reducing anyone to a diagnosis, circumstance, or difficult chapter of life.

Perspective & reflection

Grounded in experience. Open to growth.

I earned a Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling from Hofstra University and a Bachelor of Science in Applied Psychology from Farmingdale State College. I am also pursuing doctoral studies in Counselor Education and Supervision at Liberty University's School of Behavioral Sciences.

My continuing education and scholarship help me connect the enduring insights of classical psychotherapy with contemporary, evidence-informed and trauma-informed care. I also recognize the importance of spirituality and personal values in understanding each person's experiences, when these are meaningful to the individual.

Understanding people in context.

Beyond clinical practice, I have a longstanding interest in psychiatric history and the stories of the people and institutions that shaped mental health care. I find particular meaning in carrying forward the professional traditions of state hospital–trained providers, including an appreciation for the humane principles associated with moral treatment, while remaining attentive to the advances and responsibilities of modern counseling.

I enjoy photography, being outdoors, and staying active—interests that keep me curious about people, places, and the world beyond the counseling office.
